A Nice Writeup on HTML 5

ReadWriteWeb posted a nice writeup on HTML 5 entitled “5 Exciting Things to Look Forward to in HTML 5.”

1. New HTML elements that improve our ability to describe content

2. Improved web forms handling

3. APIs for easier web application development

4. The <canvas> element allows image scripting on the fly

5. Users can edit and interact with sections of a web page

Now, if we could just make up our minds to get this spec done…

My First Apple 404

Even Apple isn’t immune to the occasional webserver hiccup.  This one is an especially good catch since it is shows a web app error with the Apple web apps directory.

Thanks to Charles Carver of iCons for the snap.

MacFixit- Oh, How You’ve Fallen

Poor MacFixit has been on a steady downhill dive for years, but sad to see the database offline. Especially when we all know that the site clearly isn’t overloaded with visitors.

Good thing MacOSXHints stepped into the void.

Long Overdue Props to FileChute

Hard to believe I haven’t written about FileChute before.  I’ve recommended it so many people offline that it almost seems redundant to write here.

FileChute is simply THE solution for sending large files on the Mac.  This “Software of the Gods” is so good that it really should be built into the OS.

image

Just drag a file and drop it on FileChute. FileChute puts the file on your FTP/MobileMe/WebDAV account and generates a web link for retrieving the file all in one step. Click the generated link and a new email pops up with the link in it- ready for your recipient to download.

You can even drop multiple files or folders at once. FileChute automatically creates an archive in the format of your choice - it supports dmg, zip and tar - and sends the archive file.  You’re only limited only by disk space and bandwidth.  And, it can “expire” and delete old files- keeping your file server nice and tidy.

Yes, I could do this by hand- zip the files, ftp to server, get http url, test and email, but why bother when this whole process is boiled down to drag, drop & email?

Google Year End Search Results

As the year comes to a close, Google takes time to look at the big events, memorable moments and emerging trends that captivated us in 2008.

As it happens, studying the aggregation of the billions of search queries that people type into the Google search box gives us a glimpse into the zeitgeist — the spirit of the times. We’ve compiled some of the highlights from Google searches around the globe and hope you enjoy looking back as much as we do.

Fastest Rising (Global)

Marissa Mayer, VP Search Products & User Experience wrote an interesting blog post looking at the global Zeitgeist.  “So, what do we in this global village have in common? Mainly a strong interest in socializing and politics.”

With social sites comprising six of the top 10 sites worldwide, they’ve also taken four of the top 10 global fastest-rising queries.

YouTube in widescreen

I’m not sure how I feel about YouTube in widescreen.  Now bigger is definitely better in terms of video sizes and I do like the new wider page layout. (960 is king!)  But, showing all the video content in widescreen containers definitely seems premature.  I get the same feeling I did when I upgraded my home TV to widescreen- lots of wasted space.

Eventually we’ll all shoot widescreen, but it just seems a bit early for user-generated content.  Of course, when you view the homepage, you see what this changes is all about- commercial content shrunk down from full-on HD glory sizes.

Getting ExpressionEngine to ping useful sites

It isn’t difficult to setup ExpressionEngine to ping useful sites.  EE natively supports any XML-RPC service.  The three most useful to me are Bloglines, Google Reader & Feedburner.

Go to:

CP Home ›  Admin ›  Weblog Administration ›  Default Ping Servers

And enter the following URLs:

http://www.bloglines.com/ping
http://blogsearch.google.com/ping/RPC2
http://ping.feedburner.com
