Github takes a creative dive offline

Github uses a nifty YouTube embed when their site goes down.

“We’re down for maintenance. We’ll be back shortly (until then, enjoy this GitHub-approved video).”

Thanks to David Steinberger over at ComiXology for the snap.

Delta filtering Wi-Fi on the plane

I was wondering how long this would take.  Delta came out and said that it will be filtering its Aircell Wi-Fi plane service.

This content filter will automatically block adult sites and other material that might “make some passengers uncomfortable” from cellphones, notebooks and other Wi-Fi devices.

Surprising that they’re not targeting filesharing and other “objectionable content.”

LinkedIn is sorry

Sorry, we can’t display this page right now. (Not that our homepage isn’t important to our userbase or anything…)

I’ve seen this error several times before, but actually got a screengrab this time.  Thanks for keeping it around, LinkedIn.

Zagat is no stranger to this screen

Good ‘ole Zagat seems to be a popular place to visit the classy, Windows-based IIS error screen: “The page cannot be found”  Personally, I enjoy this screen because it often indicates that the server has crashed and not that you’ve actually hit a bad link (404).

Browser-Safe Heights for 1024x768 monitor

In the quest for the perfect height to use when designing web elements for 1024x768 monitor, I did some research on what’s in use and what works.

Tthe ideal, practical height is 560px. Width-wise, I’ve always preferred 950px.

So- 950x560 it is.

Checking out SoundUnwound, the new music site from Amazon

I’m checking out SoundUnwound beta- the new music site from Amazon and IMDb.

The data is editable by anyone allowing you to add details or corrections on most pages.  Access is tied to Amazon accounts and data initially came from MusicBrainz, Mechanical Turk and Amazon.

It’s finally here- The Google Browser

Today, Google finally announced their very own browser- Google Chrome.  The features are outlined in a 38-page comic book of all things!

The new Chrome browser will use the Apple WebKit rendering core, Google’s Gears and a Google’s own JavaScript virtual machine named V8.  V8 compiles JavaScript directly into native source code for massive performance gains.

The first version of this open source browser will be released tomorrow for Windows, with Mac and Unix versions coming soon.

“Hardware upgrades”

Continuing my series of “site down” screenshots, I grabbed this one a few moments ago when attempting to grab QuickPwn for Mac. Love the graphic of “Mount Sharemore!”

Google Gears for Safari Beta

Today, Google announced the release of beta version of Gears for Safari. This open-source project is a set of JavaScript APIs which aid in the development of offline access to web apps.  The potential is to make web apps as strong as regular desktop apps.

Proceed with caution and download your copy today.

One of the best parts is access to the Geolocation API which gives location awareness to web apps.

Nice dark design, awesome product

The longstanding iPhone camera tool, Snapture, is not only a great product, but also sports a pretty snazzy website.  The fonts may be a bit tiny, but it is a nice “dark” site with plenty of whitespace.

Too bad the software is Jailbreak-only.  I’m looking for a good camera enhancement package.
